Black Diamond is a city located in King County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,970.

Black Diamond is located at 47°19'4" North, 122°0'53" West (47.317802, -122.014793).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.2 km2 (5.9 mi2). 13.9 km2 (5.4 mi2) of it is land and 1.3 km2 (0.5 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 8.67% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 3,970 people, 1,456 households, and 1,131 families residing in the city. The population density is 285.4/km2 (739.5/mi2). There are 1,538 housing units at an average density of 110.6/km2 (286.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 93.43% White, 0.08% African American, 1.56% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 3.00% from two or more races. 2.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,456 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $67,092, and the median income for a family is $72,981. Males have a median income of $51,792 versus $31,932 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,936. 0.9% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Black Diamond was officially incorporated on February 19, 1959.
Black Diamond was a coal mining area. Eventually a town grew up around the mine in the 1880s and it was named in honor of the Black Diamond Coal Company of California, which owned and operated the mine. The town was home to around 3,500 people by the early 1900s, almost all of which produdced coal, which was transported to Seattle via the Pacific Coast Coal train.
After World War I, the town shut down the mine as it was no longer viable to maintain. However a second mining boom struck the town in the early 1930's on the strength of multiple mining operations promoted by the Morris brothers through the Palmer Coking Coal Company. Mining has continued until very recently through the Pacific Coast Coal Company, formerly of San Francisco, and the prospect of future mining operations remain strong. Today the town is home to its original mining population, as well as a growing population of commuters to Seattle, Bellevue, and elsewhere.
The town has been home to many famous residents, including folk musician Brandi Carlile (who actually grew up a few miles east in Ravensdale).
